Whey protein concentrate is the most common form of whey protein, a byproduct of cheese production. It is a common bodybuilding supplement used to increase dietary protein intake, often with the goal of maximizing muscle hypertrophy.
Whey protein contains all 9 essential amino acids, including an extra high dose of the amino acid leucine, which has been shown to effectively stimulate muscle protein synthesis.
After the whey is collected from the cheese making process, it is concentrated by removing the non-protein components. The result is a supplement that is between 75 and 85 percent pure protein, with the remaining components being carbohydrates and fats.
Whey Isolate has been filtered further than concentrate and has had almost all the fat and lactose removed, boosting its protein concentration. It can be more expensive than concentrate due to processing, but long-term studies have yet to show that isolate is superior for muscle growth and tissue repair compared to concentrate, but it is clear it has more protein per gram.

Whey concentrate is high in protein with low amounts of lactose and fat, but not as low as an isolate. Many people think whey protein concentrate is inferior to isolate, but a well-made whey concentrate can be a much better choice than a whey protein isolate.
Though whey protein concentrates will contain slightly less protein on a gram-for-gram basis than an isolate, a high-quality concentrate contains more of the other helpful compounds found in milk.
